The Pertemps Final, formerly the Coral
Golden Hurdle Final, was inaugurated in 1974, but has been sponsored
by independent recruitment company Pertemps Network Group since 2002.
The race is a Listed handicap, run over 3 miles on the New Course at
Cheltenham and open to horses aged five years and upwards that have
finished in the first six, at least once, in a qualifying race during
the current season. A series of sixteen qualifying races, known as
the Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle Series, take place at
racecourses in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and France
throughout the season.
The Pertemps Final is currently
scheduled as the second race on the third day of the Cheltenham
Festival and the Master of Jackdaws Castle, Jonjo O’Neill, is the
leading trainer, having saddled Danny Connors (1991), Inching Closer
(2003), Creon (2004), and Holywell (2013). None of the current crop
of jockeys has won the Pertemps Final more than once and just one
winning favourite in the last 10 years bears testament to what a
difficult race it is to win.
